چکیده

Levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) are tightly regulated in mammalian cells. A variety of enzymes produce ROS, including NAD(P)H oxidase, xanthine oxidase, glucose oxidase, myeloperoxidase, the family of nitric oxide synthases, and mitochondrial enzymes.1–4 Low levels of ROS such as superoxide or hydrogen peroxide regulate highly specific targets.5,6 In the cardiovascular system, for example, ROS serve as signaling molecules, mediating vascular endothelial growth factor signal transduction, activating matrix metalloproteinases, and regulating cell cycle phosphatases. Host defenses that protect against oxidative stress include small antioxidant molecules such as ascorbate, -tocopherol, glutathione, and thioredoxin (Trx), as well as antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase, catalase, paraoxonase, glutathione reductase, glutathione peroxidase, and Trx reductase.

Myocarditis in systemic diseases and the role of cardiovascular magnetic resonance.

M yocarditis is the inflammatory reaction of the heart due to infectious, toxic, or autoimmune causes. This process can be induced either by exogenous (bacteria, viruses or parasites), or endogenous (autoimmune processes, toxins, etc.) pathogenic factors. Although there has been a great deal of discussion in the international community about the role of viral myocarditis, limited data are avail...

Akt inhibitor deguelin aggravates inflammation and fibrosis in myocarditis

Objective(s): Myocarditis is characterized by inflammatory cell infiltration in myocardial stroma. Attenuation of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and interleukin (IL)-1β is a reliable mark for improving the prognosis. Protein kinase B (Akt) plays an important role in the development and progression of myocarditis. The specific role of the natural inhibitor of Akt, Deguel...

Role of the cholinergic antiinflammatory pathway in murine autoimmune myocarditis.

RATIONALE This study was performed to gain insights into novel therapeutic approaches for the treatment of autoimmune myocarditis. OBJECTIVE Chemical stimulation of the efferent arm of the vagus nerve through activation of nicotinic acetylcholine receptor subtype-7α (α7-nAChR) has been shown to be protective in several models of inflammatory diseases. In the present study, we investigated the...

cis Element decoy against nuclear factor-kappaB attenuates development of experimental autoimmune myocarditis in rats.

Nuclear factor-kappaB (NFkappaB) plays a significant role in the coordinated transactivation of cytokine, inducible NO synthase (iNOS), and adhesion molecule genes. Although inflammation is an essential pathological feature of myocarditis, the role of NFkappaB in this process remains obscure. We examined the role of NFkappaB in the progression of rat experimental autoimmune myocarditis (EAM) an...
